Divot Tool Source

If you have been playing golf for any length of time, you have seen some really strange things on the golf course. We all know the rules, and we all know the standards for golf etiquette, or at least we should.

We have all stood on the green, lined up our putt, and realized there was a big dent in the green that our ball would have to deal with on it’s path to the hole. There are few things more annoying than this. it takes approximately 5 seconds to properly repair your ball mark when you arrive at the green, but for some reason a lot of people just refuse to do it. Every golfer on the course should carry a divot repair tool, but not everyone does.

The standard line you see posted in golf carts or on score cards is the encouragement to repair two divots on each green; yours and one other. Can you imagine how perfect every green on every golf course would be if even half of all golfers would do this? Half the golfers, each repairing 2 divots, would effectively repair every ball mark on every course! But that is much easier said than done, mostly because many golfers just refuse to do it.

The nice thing about golf is it is truly the sport of gentlemen. It is the norm for golfers to call penalties on themselves. If you are a golfer who follows the spirit of the game, and you would actually call your own penalty and score yourself appropriately, why feel bad about reporting another golfer who is NOT following the rules? Turn him in! If the course you pay your hard earned money to is being damaged by someone, consider it your duty, rather than an option, to report him. Your fellow golfers will appreciate you, and who cares what the guy you reported thinks?

Golfers should police themselves. On any given day on most courses there are maybe 1 or 2 Rangers riding the course. They cannot see everything, and even if they did many are volunteers and look the other way at etiquette violations. It is up to us, the rank and file of casual golfers, to police our sport and improve the playing experience for all of us.

When you pack your clubs, make sure you bring your hat, some sunscreen, your divot repair tool, and some common sense to the course. Your fellow golfers will appreciate you for it.
