Any serious golfer knows that golf is not a cheap sport. You have to dress to a certain standard, and a set of golf clubs will set you back several hundred dollars. Once you have the clothes and clubs, you still need balls and tees and then you have to pay your way onto the golf course. So as you can see, you will be spending some money if you want to play this game!

The good news is that once you have the clubs, balls, tees, and clothes you don’t need to pay for much else except of course your greens fees. Well, we both know there will be those little silly bets that all golfers make during a round of golf, but at least that is something you control.

The point is that golf is not a sport for those with empty wallets. But to enjoy the game and comply with the requirements of golf etiquette, you do need one other small thing. That is a divot repair tool. “What’s a divot?”, you ask? Wow, you are new to this game! OK, let me explain. When you hit your approach shot into a green, the ball will land and skip. When it hits the green it will usually take a little ball sized bite out of the grass. That ball mark is the divot.

Imagine if golfers went around a golf course all day and nobody repaired their divots? It would be golf chaos! Greens are meticulously manicured and since the grass is so short it is very susceptible to damage. Your ball can cause a divot even if you have just a short shot into the green. Imagine trying to putt consistently if your ball is running through divot marks on the green. This game is hard enough! For that reason, upon arrival on a green, always inspect the area where your ball landed. If you find a divot, repair it with your divot repair tool.

Divot repair tools come in many shapes, sizes, and styles. But the working end of the divot tool will almost always be pretty much the same. It will consist of two points and a wider handle. The operation is simple; insert the forks into the ground at a 45 degree angle just behind the divot. Push the divot tool into and under the divot and then lift slightly while giving it a slight twist. This will loosen up the dirt under the damaged grass. Now, pull the divot tool out of the ground and pat the spot with the base of your putter. This procedure only takes a few seconds, but when you are finished the surface should be flat enough to not throw a ball off course should it run over that spot. The grass will grow back in a day or two.

So after you have spent hundreds on clubs, clothes, booze, bets and greens fees, do everyone a favor and spend just a couple of more dollars and keep a golf divot repair tool in your bag.
